Cataract Surgery in Hertfordshire
“I am most grateful to you Mr Toma and your team for carrying out my procedure and for making both the experience and the recovery quick and pain-free.” Alan Craig,
What is a cataract?
A cataract is when the natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy, usually caused by ageing. A cataract can change the focus of your eye or cause blurred vision.
What should I do?
You can come and see one of our Ophthalmic Surgeons here at Pinehill. All our Consultants are highly skilled and experienced surgeons who regularly perform cataract surgery both in the NHS and here at Pinehill. If you have private medical insurance, please contact your insurance company to authorise your initial consultation (and at every stage after). If you are paying for your own treatment, an initial consultation is around £220 and for the procedure, we offer fixed package prices which start from £2500. This includes everything during your visit to Pinehill for surgery - the surgeons fee, theatre costs the implant itself and refreshments.
What are the steps?
- Simply call us here at Pinehill on 01462 410 002 and we will arrange an appointment for you to see one of our Consultants (normally within 3 working days).
- They will then thoroughly check your vision and determine which sort of lense you need (Multifocal, Toric, Symfony, Tecnis etc).
- You will then discuss a surgery date that suits you (normally within a few weeks).
- You then come in on the day of surgery, and leave the same day. You will be given drops to put in your eyes.
Why have surgery?
Following a successful operation your vision should improve considerably. The surgery normally lasts no more than 20 minutes and is generally performed under a local anaesthetic so the recovery time is quicker that if you'd been given a general anaesthetic.
Options other than surgery?
Spectacles can improve your vision but in most cases, if the cataract is too advanced, surgery is the only option to restore your vision.
What happens during the operation?
Although a variety of anaesthetic techniques are possible, cataract surgery is normally performed under a local anaesthetic. During the operation, your cataract is removed and an artificial lens is implanted.
"I can honestly say that I did not feel or see a thing during surgery. I was so nervous but I needn't have been. I couldn't believe it when they said it was over!"
What complications can occur?
Complications can occur during any procedure. However, having the operation performed by a fully trained and highly skilled Ophthalmic Surgeon, and being in good health yourself, greatly reduces the risk.
How long will I be in hospital and what happens when I leave?
The procedure is nearly always performed as a day case which means you do not need to stay overnight. The operation itself takes around 20 minutes and you should be able to go home a few hours after the operation. You will need to see your optician for an eye test three to six weeks after your operation as you will almost certainly need new glasses. Most people make a good recovery with improved vision.
Why choose Pinehill Hospital?

They are all highly skilled surgeons, experienced consultants who conduct many procedures and operations every week. They all hold posts in the NHS as well as working privately at Pinehill so you can be assured that you are in good hands.
What our patients say......
“I have had two cataract operations at Pinehill Hospital this year. I would like to say a big thank you to you Mr Toma and your team for the wonderful results. No more looking through sepia coloured eyes, everything is so crystal clear. My optician said “the ops are fantastic”. My long sight has doubled. The downside….now I can see the true extent of the grey hair and wrinkles! Again many thanks.”
“I write to thank you, somewhat belatedly, for carrying out my second cataract operation earlier this year. The dramatic improvement to my clarity of vision was obvious almost immediately. Virtually every day since then I have had reason to marvel at the sharpness of something new I’ve seen and to be reminded of your excellent work. I am most grateful to you Mr Toma and your team for carrying out this procedure so skilfully and for making both the experience and the recovery quick and pain-free.”
“I had my second cataract operation last week and I would like to say a big thank you to you Mr Toma and the staff at Pinehill. Everyone was so kind and helpful, and the operation seems to have been successful. I am now living in a brighter more colourful world.”
