Breast Enlargement (Augmentation)
What is a breast enlargement (augmentation)?
A breast enlargement (sometimes referred to as a 'boob job') is performed by inserting a breast implant behind your natural breast tissue. This pushes and projects the natural breast tissue forward, giving a fuller and larger breast appearance. This can provide both physical and psychological benefits. Ladies who have undergone breast enlargement report that they feel more feminine and personally feel confident about their new body image. Having bigger breasts can mean that ladies experience improved self esteem as a result of having surgery. If you feel that you have small breast (or smaller than you would like), this may be something you would consider.
How is it performed?
Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The procedure takes around one hour and patients may be able to go home the same day.
What are the results like and how will I feel?
This procedure can provide excellent results in women wishing to improve and increase their breast shape and size. The operation should only be undertaken by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon (often referred to as a Cosmetic Surgeon or Cosmetic Consultant) who is fully qualified and well experienced in this type of specialist breast surgery. Most women experience some discomfort following breast surgery and take pain killers for up to one week following surgery. It is important to allow for a natural period of healing to take place and to abstain from strenuous activity or from heavy lifting for six weeks following surgery.
Are there any risks involved having a breast augmentation?
All surgery involves an element of risk from developing complications. However, cosmetic surgery is usually undertaken voluntarily and only when a patient is in good health. Therefore, the probability of experiencing complications from this kind of surgery are substantially lower than those who undergo surgery due to ill health. If you have any concerns at all, please speak to your Plastic Specialist (Plastic Consultant) at your consultation.
