Mammography breast screening
Mammography is essential for early detection of potential breast
problems when combined with routine self breast examinations.
Screening mammography is an x-ray examination to help detect early
signs of breast disease and is available to women over the age of
40 who are asymptomatic (have no breast problems), and have no
family history of breast problems. Our mammograms are double
reported (in line with NHS BSP Guidelines) by highly trained
Consultant Radiologists who specialise in breast imaging. Results
are sent directly to you with a copy to your GP.
If you would like to find out more
information about breast screening or to book an appointment, you
can contact us on 01462 427203
or by filling out our
online form.
What happens during the Mammogram?
A female Radiographer specialising in mammography will place
your breast on a special x-ray machine. A plastic plate will be
pressed down slowly to compress your breast and hold it in place
for a few seconds. You will feel some pressure on your breast for a
few seconds during the x-ray. This pressure does not harm your
breast tissue. The pictures are taken and radiographer will check
the pictures to make sure they are good enough quality for the
Radiologist to read. If needed, she will take additional
pictures.
How to get ready for a Mammogram
On the day of the mammogram
We suggest you wear a two-piece outfit as you will be asked to
remove your top. Do not use deodorants, antiperspirants, body
lotions or talcum powders as metals in these products can show up
on the x-ray picture.
Please bring with you details of your own GP, and any old breast
x-rays that your may have had previously which are crucial to a
definitive report.
